Frequently Asked Questions - Roswell
Answers by Tom Query, LPC

What is Counseling?
Meetings with an objective professional to talk in an intentional way.

A counselor should listen well and be able to offer suggestions, explore options and ask
questions that can help you find the answers or solutions to the most important issues in
your life.

How Might a Counselor Help You?
Counseling can be life changing for some people.

A Counselor should try to determine the causes of unhappiness, dissatisfaction, pain,
problems and confusion.

A counselor should encourage changes that will increase independence, self-reliance,
relational intimacy, spirituality, and increase emotional health and satisfaction in one’s
personal and family life.

A trusted counselor can be called on for a sounding board, direction, advice, or just a
venting spot.

Who Can Benefit from Counseling?
Everyone!

The important things in life are addressed, such as, relationships, family, marriage,
children, grief/loss, career, happiness.

Do Only Sick People Need Counseling?
No, counseling is not just for “sick” people.

Counseling is for healthy people who want help to find ways to grow emotionally in
their lives and relationships.

Counseling is not psychiatry or medical treatment in the form of a pill for mental
illness.

Can Anyone Offer Counseling?
No, counselors are professionals who go through extensive training.

Counselors have special degrees and are licensed by the state.

Counselors may have varied titles or specialties, such as, psychotherapist, marriage
and family counselors, pastoral counselors, Licensed Professional Counselor, or
psychologist.

Are There Different Types of Counseling?
Yes, there are more types than you can imagine.

I am trained in experiential psychotherapy and as a pastoral counselor.

What is Experiential Psychotherapy?
Experiential psychotherapy focuses on the “here and now” in one’s life.

It is concerned about the past (why we are the way we are), but focuses on how
satisfied you are with your life right now.

You will be asked, “What things you want to improve and change in your life?”

The counselor is honest and direct.

Instant solutions are not offered and simple “A, B, C’s” to follow is not given.

What is Pastoral Counseling?
Pastoral counseling encourages the exploration of the spiritual side of a person, but
the client’s wishes are respected.  Pastoral counseling is not denominational or
focused on doctrine, but helps clients search for their desires and needs for spiritual
expression in their life.

How do I Know What Type of Counseling I Need?
You need to shop around.  Some counselors see individuals and not families or
children.  Some specialize in certain areas—sex, grief, analysis.

Counselors should take time to evaluate what you want or need, and determine if
there is a good match in their skills and your need, so they can tailor the sessions
toward your goals.  They will refer you to someone else if you are not a good match.

What if My Child or Adolescent Needs Help?
Children are our most precious resource.

We mold and shape our children in the form they become.

When children have problems at home and/or school or when a divorce occurs in a
family, a counselor may be able to assist parents and the child by evaluating the
child’s whole environment.

What if My Marriage Needs Help?
Marriage, including the search for a mate, is probably the most important personal
task anyone undertakes.

Relationships can be difficult.  Intimacy, happiness, sex, and loneliness are huge parts
of our satisfaction in life.

Marriage counseling can provide the support that is needed for maintaining a better
relationship.
